OP #255: Teen Consumer Survey

Even though it's short, there are some good recos and reading in this OP.

Happy Tuesday OP Community,

I’m on holiday this week getting a little R&R with the family.

I am missing the good time at Possible in Miami with many of you. I hope it was a worthwhile show as I know it was last year.

The next event I’ll be at is the Silicon Alley Sports Golf + Pickleball event in Westchester County, NY. There are a few schmoozer tickets available if anyone is interested in joining.  All monies left over from hosting the events are donated to Team Daya this year.

I’d love to hear from you about topics that I should pursue in future OPs. If you have ideas, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Thanks again for your time and attention. Never hesitate to reach out.

Darren

Some Tidbits From This Past Week

💡 Scott Schiller stopped by my office this week and we had a good chat around productivity hacks, his NYU class and consulting practice, and the media landscape. And of course we also spoke about the Knicks. A couple of tools he’s excited about are Things 3 (GTD) and Dex (personal CRM).

💥 I have not seen any new news around Google Hubspot but heard from many of you from last week’s OP

🏀 I am excited for the forthcoming NBA Postseason.  The Knicks are looking solid and while not championship caliber, could make a decent run. They clinched home court advantage in the first round and Brunson is looking like a league MVP. Have fun watching this.

💻 There’s things you can do and there’s things you should do.  Just because you can, does not mean you should. Putting ads inside the Start menu feels a bit off for MSFT.

🕸 These terrible sites existed before and thanks to AI, it’s even easier to create them. This WSJ article walks through how someone built an ai-powered self running propaganda machine for $105.

⚡ Has anyone put in an application to attend the All-In Summit? I am a fan of the podcast even though sometimes I may not agree with everything they are saying. I’m debating whether I’ll attend in-person. I think it’s $7,500 which is not inexpensive.

Reacting To The Piper Sandler 2024 Teens Survey

Piper Sandler just released their 2024 Teens Survey and thought it would be interesting to interview my 13-year old daughter about it. If you have not seen the survey, check it out here.

Note, my 13 year old daughter is not indicative of the rest of America and I totally realize that. This is meant to be more fun than anything but at the same time, she has an eye for brands.

Me: What do you think about the top ecommerce websites listed in the report?
Ava: I’m not a fan of Shein and Temu. The quality isn’t good and I’m afraid it’s going to put more “goods” into the world and create more garbage.

Me: What do you think about the top clothing brands referenced in the report?
Ava: I’d replace Shein with Garage. I just love their style. I’m still a big fan of Lululemon, Hollister and AE/Aerie.

Me: As it pertains to beauty destinations, why are you a big fan of Sephora?
Ava: They have a big selection and strong sales. You get to try things and they have a good return policy. I’ve sent a bunch of things back and they don’t ask many questions.

Me: Now that you’ve seen the top list for cosmetics, what is your reaction?
Ava: I think elf deserves top spot as it’s good as an accessible brand. I love Rare Beauty - I think it is my #1. I also like Makeup by Mario and Hourglass.

Me: When you look at the top footwear brands, how do you react?
Ava: I just bought a pair of Lululemon shoes and I do not see them up there. I also notice lots of kids wearing Hoka and do not see them up there either. I still do like my Nikes too.

Me: How do you react to the top restaurant list?
Ava: I have a love/hate relationship with Chick-Fil-A. I love their food but I do not like what the company supports. I noticed Raising Canes on the list but I have not had it yet… but do want to try it.

Me: What entertainment platforms do you watch?
Ava: My top ones are Hulu or HBO Max. I am really into The Bear, Modern Family, Friends, and Ginny and Georgia (Netflix).

Thank you for the interview, Ava!

A short but sweet section of some articles that I read this week. To be honest, I didn’t read a ton… it’s been super busy and I’ve been heads down.
